DEXA Scan Cost

Clear, fixed pricing for a private DEXA bone density scan, with fast appointments and consultant-reviewed results.

About This Service

A private DEXA bone density scan at Friends Medical is a fixed 225 pounds, all-inclusive, with your results reviewed by a clinician. A clinical referral is required before booking. Call 028 9621 1981 to arrange your scan.

This page covers the price and what it includes. For how the scan works, who it is for and how to prepare, see our main DEXA scan page.

A DEXA (or DXA) scan is the gold-standard test for measuring bone density and diagnosing osteoporosis. This page explains exactly what you pay, what is included, and how referral works.

What is included in your DEXA scan price

The price you see is the price you pay. Your fixed fee of £225 covers everything you need for a complete, useful result:

  • Your full DEXA bone density scan
  • Scanning of the hip and spine
  • A clinician review of your results
  • A clear written report with your T-score
  • Advice on what your results mean
  • Guidance on any recommended next steps

Do you need a referral for a DEXA scan?

A DEXA scan uses a low dose of radiation, so a clinical referral is required before booking. This can be a referral from your own GP, an NHS GP, or any outside clinician, or you can book an appointment with our internal GP first, who can provide the referral for you.

What a DEXA scan measures, and why it matters

A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-ray to measure the mineral density of your bones, most commonly at the hip and lower spine, where osteoporosis-related fractures are most serious.

Osteoporosis is often silent, with no symptoms until a bone breaks. A DEXA scan is the recognised way to detect thinning bones early, so you can act to protect your bone health.

Understanding your T-score

Your results are reported as a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult. Above -1 is normal, between -1 and -2.5 is low bone density (osteopenia), and -2.5 or below is in the osteoporosis range.

Every scan at Friends Medical includes a clinician review, so your T-score is explained in plain language alongside your age, history and risk factors.

How to book and what to expect

  1. Get a referral and book. Bring a referral from any GP or clinician, or book an appointment with our internal GP who can provide one. Appointments are usually available within days.
  2. Your scan. The scan is quick, painless and takes 15 minutes. You stay fully clothed and lie still while the scanner passes over you.
  3. Reviewed results. A clinician reviews your scan and you receive a clear written report with your T-score and personalised advice.
