What a sebaceous cyst is
A sebaceous or epidermoid cyst is a small sac under the skin filled with a soft, waxy material. They are very common and almost always harmless, but they can catch on clothing, become tender, grow over time, or occasionally become infected and inflamed. Removing the cyst deals with it and lets you stop worrying about what it is.
When to have a cyst removed

The procedure
The area is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic, so you are comfortable throughout. Our consultant plastic surgeon removes the whole cyst along with its sac, then closes the wound with stitches. Removing the entire sac, rather than simply draining the contents, is what reduces the chance of the cyst returning. The appointment is usually short and you go home the same day.
What we check for
Where appropriate, the removed cyst is sent to the laboratory for analysis to confirm what it was, and we share the result with you. This is routine and is part of doing the job properly.
Recovery and scarring
Most people return to normal activity quickly, taking care to keep the area clean and dry while it heals. There will be a small scar, which fades over time. We give you clear aftercare advice and arrange removal of any stitches that are not dissolvable.
